Meeting customer challenges with innovative solutions
Context: awareness and identification of Izipizi's emissions.
Izipizi is a French eyewear brand established in Paris in 2010. Concerned about its carbon footprint, Izipizi initiated actions to limit it. In 2019, the company was assisted in carrying out a carbon footprint assessment that helped define an overall goal of reducing the carbon footprint of its eyewear by 50% by 2023 . The major emission items identified are production/raw material (45%), and transportation(38%) with an overweighted impact of air transport, which accounts for 7% of eyewear delivery but 84% of carbon emissions.
Izipizi's challenge: reduce by half its carbon footprint.
Izipizi's challenge is to meet the objective of reducing its carbon footprint by 50% by 2023. To achieve this, Izipizi has implemented several actions including modal shift to favor sea over air . In 2017, considered as a reference year, the weight of Izipizi's inbound air transport represented 47% of Izipizi's total transport. Between 2017 and 2020, the share allocated to air dropped to 5% and the goal by 2023 is to drop below 3% air.
Switching from air to sea involves a higher degree of uncertainty, as well as a lack of flexibility due to longer transit times and the risks inherent in shipping goods by sea, such as theft, breakage, roll-out and blank sailing. Nevertheless, the advantages of this mode of transport are unquestionable. Sea freight is up to 10 times less expensive and, above all, emits 50 times less CO2 than air freight.
OVRSEA acts as a facilitator within this strategy of modal shift from air to sea. OVRSEA is the primarily freight forwarder used by Izipizi. The OVRSEA platform allows Izipizi to have a global visibility for each of its transport flows and thus of the carbon emissions linked to this flow, as the figure below illustrates.
As soon as the quotation is sent, the carbon intensity is indicated for each proposal sent by OVRSEA. This allows Izipizi to choose between several alternatives for the same mode of transport even before the transport is validated.
Delivering exceptional results and benefits to our customers
- Facilitate the implementation of Izipizi's modal shift strategy towards maritime transport
- Enable the management of Izipizi's carbon reporting and transport decarbonization strategy
Project progress
OVRSEA's key role in enabling Izipizi to control the carbon impact of its transportation.
Izipizi also performs regular carbon audits to assess the progress of its carbon footprint reduction objectives.Since 2022, Izipizi has been using OVRSEA data directly to manage its carbon reporting and its transport decarbonization strategy thanks to the reliable and accurate carbon measurement provided by OVRSEA.
Why does OVRSEA have this reliable measure? OVRSEA has a bottom-up approach. This means that OVRSEA calculates the emissions of each transport, taking into account the actual trip made, and the most granular estimates. By aggregating this data over the year, OVRSEA is able to deduce the CO2 emissions of Izipizi's transports. All of this is grouped together on a dashboard provided by OVRSEA, which allows Izipizi to situate itself in relation to its carbon emission objectives and constraints, and to have a precise estimate of the impact of its international transport on its carbon footprint.
This table allows to arbitrate the transport decisions according to the criteria that Izipizi has set beforehand: breakage rate, percentage of air transport (less than 3%), and economic factors. The Izipizi committee can monitor directly on the OVRSEA platform, the rate of air transport since the beginning of the year as well as the carbon footprint of the transport of Izipizi glasses for the year. Between 2021 and 2022, Izipizi was able to reduce the carbon intensity per pair of glasses from 1.4 gCo2 to 1.27gCo2.
